This article explains how double opt-in subscription confirmation works and how you can create and use a double opt-in confirmation message in LianaMailer.
Note The double opt-in feature must be enabled in the settings first. This article focuses on creating and managing the confirmation message.
What is double opt-in?
Double opt-in is a two-step subscription process that ensures the subscriber has personally provided their email address and wants to receive messages.
The process works as follows:
- A user fills in a newsletter subscription form.
- The system automatically sends a confirmation message to the provided email address.
- The subscription is activated only after the user clicks the confirmation link in the message.
Without this confirmation, the email address is not added as an active subscriber.
Why use a confirmation message?
A double opt-in confirmation message helps to:
- ensure the subscriber’s consent
- prevent incorrect or misused email addresses from being added
- improve mailing list quality and email deliverability
- support data protection requirements (e.g. GDPR)
Creating a double opt-in confirmation message in LianaMailer
Once the double opt-in feature is enabled, you can create a confirmation message as follows:
Log in to LianaMailer.
Go to Settings.
Select Sites and click the address of the subscription page where you want to add the double opt-in message.
Next to Welcome message, click Add.
In the dialog that opens, select the message template you want to use as the base for the confirmation message.
Edit the message content as needed. The process is similar to creating and sending a newsletter. Remember to add the confirmation link
$confirm$to the message (either via the Add placeholder menu or using the regular link insertion functionality).
What should the confirmation message include?
We recommend that the confirmation message clearly states:
- why the recipient is receiving the message
- which newsletter or content the subscription applies to
- clear instructions on how to confirm the subscription, for example: “Please confirm your newsletter subscription by clicking the button below.”
What happens after confirmation?
When the subscriber clicks the confirmation link:
- the subscription is activated automatically
- the email address is added as an active subscriber
- the email address is added to the list joined to the subscription page
If the subscription is not confirmed
If the subscriber does not click the confirmation link:
- the subscription is not activated
- the email address will not receive newsletters
- the email address is not added to the list
Common issues
The confirmation message does not arrive
Ask the subscriber to:
- check spam and promotional folders
- make sure the email address was entered correctly
- submit the subscription again if needed
The confirmation link does not work
If the $confirm$ link is not entered correctly, it doesn't work.
