Fonts in newsletters

Web-safe fonts

A web-safe font is a font that is installed usually on most devices and they are very common. A lot of the times a web-safe font is used as the main font in HTML newsletters, because they are well supported in different email clients. We can also use web-fonts, but because some email clients don’t have the support for showing web-fonts, it is advised to always choose a web-safe fallback font for a web-font. Read more about web-fonts below.

Here is a list of fonts that have worked perfectly in all of our tests:

  • Georgia
  • Times New Roman
  • Arial
  • Verdana
  • Courier New
  • Helvetica Neue
  • Trebuchet MS

The following fonts have worked quite comprehensively:

  • Impact
  • Tahoma
  • Calibri
  • Palatino
  • Arial Black
  • Arial Narrow

Web-fonts

Web-fonts are fonts that are not installed on the users device, but instead are imported over the web. For example if your brands main font is available on Google Fonts, the font can be imported to your newsletter. With web-fonts your newsletter looks a little bit more unique and can positively stick out from the rest.

All email clients don’t unfortunately have support for web-fonts. So if you are using a web-font as your main font, you should also choose a fallback font, preferably one of the web-safe fonts listed above. The email clients that do not support web-fonts, will instead show the fallback font. It is common to use a web-font as the first font and for example Arial as the fallback font.

Programs and devices that support web fonts:

  • Apple Mail
  • Outlook (MacOS)
  • iPhones and iPads
  • Browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge

Programs that don't support web fonts:

  • Outlook (Windows)
  • Windows-Mail
  • Gmail (Android)
  • Gmail, Office 365, Outlook.com, Yahoo! Mail

Font selection in Template Editor newsletters

If you are using our Template Editor newsletters, you can find a font selection in the settings. The selection consists of a wide range of different fonts. Each of the fonts has a list of fallback fonts. This is a so called font stack. The fonts are listed in the preferred order of which fonts to show if the earlier font cannot be shown for some reason or another. Some of the fonts are web-fonts and they are imported from Google Fonts to your newsletter. As some email clients don’t support web-fonts, it might be possible that for example Outlook shows a fallback font instead of the selected main font. You can read more about web-fonts above.

It is not possible to import fonts outside of this list to Template Editor newsletters.
